Song Critique – 4/20

The next song critique is this Wednesday, April 20th at 7 p.m. at Noodles & Co., 3600 University Avenue. Bring a new and nearly new song or lyric to play live or on CD and get instant feedback from local songwriters, and give some of your own. Check out the Events page for more details.

Tune Up Your Songwriting – Wed, April 13th

Come to the Willy St. Co-op East on Wednesday, April 13th for the workshop, Tune Up Your Songwriting.  Songwriter, engineer, producer and entrepreneur Tret Fure will discuss her experience writing and performing followed by a group discussion hosted by Rich Baumann.

There may be time to share original songs at the end of the workshop, so please bring your instrument if you are interested. As part of the workshop, you are invited to bring a recording of a favorite song for the group to listen to, yours or someone else’s. A CD player will be available.

This event starts with a 5:30 potluck/meet and greet followed by the 6:30 workshop. Admission is a suggested $5-15 donation.

Willy St. Co-op East is located at 1221 Williamson St. in Madison. Out of consideration for Co-op shoppers, please park on the street.

March Song Showdown – 3/6

The Song Showdown rolls on Wednesday, March 6th at 7 p.m. at Red Dragon TV, 109 E. Lakeside St. in Madison. Hosted by 2010’s Song Showdown winner, Wolfgang Lochner, the Showdown is also webcast live on http://www.reddragontv.tv.

Come to compete, play at the open mic, or to cheer on your favorite performer. Everyone’s welcome to play in the open mic, but you must be an MSG member to compete in the Showdown and new members may sign up at the event.

Come to the Willy St. Co-op East on Wednesday, March 9th for this new workshop called Tune Up Your Songwriting.  Local folk, environmental and kid-friendly songwriter Ken Lonnquist will present his experience writing and performing followed by a group discussion hosted by Rich Baumann.

As part of the workshop, you are invited to bring a recording of a favorite song for the group to analyze. Several songs will be selected to illustrate what makes a good song. A CD player will be available.

March Song Showdown Winner

Congratulations to Brandy Held who won this month’s Song Showdown with her piano-driven song, “Chaser.” Brandy is a local songwriter who also teaches guitar and piano in her west side music studio. See the youtube video here.

Songwriters in the Round – 2/23

Stop by The Brink Lounge on Wednesday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. for this month’s Songwriters in the Round. Madison Songwriters Guild’s premier event features tons of original music starring a rotating cast of local and regional songwriters.

February’s featured songwriters include:

Mark Adkins – the mastermind behind Madison’s favorite psychedelic folk noir band, Subvocal.
John Argentiero – strips away the electric layers to attempt acoustic world domination
Steve Schad – an accomplished acoustic guitarist with an eclectic style.

Songwriter Night – 2/10 @ Water House Foods

This Thursday night, guest host Dave Schindele takes over this intimate songwriter night which will feature performers Patrick McCormick and Stephen Lee Rich sharing their original music at Water House Foods in Lake Mills at 7:00 p.m. Cover is only $5 and there will be a chance for audience members to share a song right before the performance at 6:30. Take a short drive out to Water House Foods and support great music at a great new venue.

Song Showdown resumes in February!

The Song Showdown kicks off again on Wed., 2/2 and continues on the first Wednesday of every month at Red Dragon TV, 109 E. Lakeside in Madison. This new edition will be hosted by 2010’s Song Showdown winner, Wolfgang Lochner.

The Showdown will start at 7:00 p.m. and be webcast live each month on http://www.reddragontv.tv. Come to compete, play during the open mic, or just be part of the fun. Everyone’s welcome to play in the open mic. However, only MSG members may compete in the Showdown, but new members can sign up on the spot.
