Songwriter Showcase/Showdown – Wed, 6/6

Head over to the Bourbon Street Grille in Monona at 7:30 pm and experience MSG’s newest edition to the local songwriting scene, the Songwriter Showcase/Showdown. John Duggleby hosts this new monthly event featuring great area songwriters, followed by an “American Idol”-type competition for original songs (MSG membership required) and an open mic for anyone who wants to perform their compositions. Non-members can join MSG on the spot by paying the annual membership fee of $25.

This month John welcomes MSG stalwart and treasurer Lynn Smith, and our youngest member, 15-year-old sensation Corinne McKnight.

Songwriters in the Round – Wed., May 23rd

Madison Songwriters Guild holds our premier event, Songwriters in the Round, at The Brink Lounge this Wednesday, May 23rd starting at 7:00 pm.

This month’s SIR will feature Julia McConahay and friends.

Join us for a heaping helping of original music by unique local songwriters for a paltry $5. For more information about Songwriters In the Round, check out our Events page.

Monthly Critique – 5/16 @ 7 pm

MSG holds its monthly song critique on Wednesday, May 16th at 7 p.m. at Noodles & Company on University Avenue. Bring a song or lyric to play live or on a CD and get instant feedback from local songwriters, and give some of your own. Incomplete, new or nearly new songs , in particular, are encouraged.

***We’ve added a new feature to the critique called the Monthly Song Challenge. In June, the challenge is aimed at those of us who procrastinate: Complete a song that you’ve started (or always thought about writing but haven’t started) and bring it to the critique to share.

Tune Up Your Songwriting – Wed, 5/9

Drive, run or bike on down to the Willy St. Co-op East on Wednesday, April 11th for the latest monthly installment of Tune Up Your Songwriting with hostRich Baumann and this month’s guest presenter, piano poet Dave Schindele. This event is designed to give songwriters musical food for thought in a friendly atmosphere with other local songwriters.

Bring your instrument to share a song at the end of the workshop or come with a CD recording of a favorite song for the group to listen to and discuss.  This event starts with a 5:30 potluck/meet and greet followed by the 6:30 workshop. Admission is a suggested $5-15 donation.

Monthly Song Critique – Wed, 4/18 ***change in location

MSG holds its monthly song critique on Wednesday, April 18th 7 p.m. at Panera Bread, located at 3416 University Avenue. This temporary change for April is less than 2 blocks east of the usual Noodles & Co. spot.

Bring a song or lyric to play live or on a CD and get instant feedback from local songwriters, and give some of your own. Incomplete, new or nearly new songs , in particular, are encouraged.

***We’ve added a new feature to the critique called the Monthly Song Challenge. Next month’s challenge will be chosen at the critique, so come with your ideas. Songwriters are urged to interpret the challenge in any way that helps write a new tune.

This month’s SIR will feature an acoustic version of John “Das Binky” Argentiero‘s big pop/rock, the blues-rock of Rita Witter and the jazz stylings of Nancy Rost.
