MSG is building a new event for local songwriters at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. Host Rich Baumann will gather a small group of songwriters at Water House Foods, 110 E. New event! Song Showdown
MSG is reviving the Song Showdown thanks to host and local songwriting icon, Jim Schwall. It’s slated to happen at The Alchemy, located at 1980 Atwood Avenue in Madison, every 2nd Wednesday of the month starting in 2010, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. There will be an open mic followed by the showdown.
At each event, a “Song of the Month” winner will be chosen and will receive a free Broadjam membership, a gift certificate to The Alchemy, a spot in the next Songwriters in the Round, and a complimentary string change from Lane’s Lutherie. In addition, winners are invited to perform on Jonathan Zarov’s Friday 8 O’Clock Buzz on WORT. At the end of the year, the eleven monthly winners will compete for the coveted “Song of the Year” title, which will be rewarded with a bigger Alchemy gift certificate and a professional recording of the song at the award-winning Paradyme Productions recording studio.
MSG membership is required to compete in the Song Showdown, but that’s the easy part; someone will be available to sign up new members on the spot. Any questions? Contact Jim Schwall.
Song Critique
Held on the third Wednesday of every month at Noodles & Co., 3600 University Avenue at 7:00 p.m. This is a great way for songwriters to network and get feedback on new material. Songwriters should bring 10 copies of lyric/chord sheets and either a recording of the song or an instrument to play it on. If you need a guitar, there is usually one available. While new or in-progress songs are preferred, writers are welcome even if you don’t have a song to present. Cost is free for MSG members and $5.00 for non-members.
Songwriters in the Round (SIR)
Songwriters in the Round typically takes place on the fourth Wednesday of every month (exceptions may be made for November/December) at The Brink Lounge, 701 E. Washington Ave in Madison. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and the cover charge is just $5.00. Join us to hear tons of original music in this listener-friendly atmosphere!
Songwriting Workshops and Recording Seminars
Check the MSG home page frequently for these updated events. The workshops give songwriters an opportunity to grow our skills by attending a songwriting workshop with well-known and successful songwriters who practice what they teach. Most workshops involve putting the information to practical use during the workshop by writing songs.
Recording seminars are occasionally offered to give songwriters and performers an opportunity to get into the studio and do a high quality demo. Some of the recording seminars include a chance to come back and create a more produced demo with the producer.
