April Songwriters in the Round – 4/27 @ 7 pm

Come down to The Brink Lounge on Wednesday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. for the April edition of Songwriters in the Round. Madison Songwriters Guild’s premier event features heaps of original music starring a rotating cast of local and regional songwriters for a measly $5.

April’s line-up features the gentle blues of Jim Barnard, poetic music by Lynn Smith, and the harmoniously humorous folk duo, Andina & Rich.

Song Critique – 4/20

The next song critique is this Wednesday, April 20th at 7 p.m. at Noodles & Co., 3600 University Avenue. Bring a new and nearly new song or lyric to play live or on CD and get instant feedback from local songwriters, and give some of your own. Check out the Events page for more details.

Songwriter Night – Water House Foods, Thursday night

This Thursday night,  April 18th, Rich Baumann hosts this intimate songwriter night which will feature performers Tom Kastle, Richard Skeat (a.k.a. The Big Swell) and Jim Barnard sharing their original music at Water House Foods in Lake Mills at 7:00 p.m. Cover is only $5 and there will be a chance for audience members to share a song right before the performance at 6:30. Take a short drive out to Water House Foods and support great music at a great new venue!

Tune Up Your Songwriting – Wed, April 13th

Come to the Willy St. Co-op East on Wednesday, April 13th for the workshop, Tune Up Your Songwriting.  Songwriter, engineer, producer and entrepreneur Tret Fure will discuss her experience writing and performing followed by a group discussion hosted by Rich Baumann.

There may be time to share original songs at the end of the workshop, so please bring your instrument if you are interested. As part of the workshop, you are invited to bring a recording of a favorite song for the group to listen to, yours or someone else’s. A CD player will be available.

This event starts with a 5:30 potluck/meet and greet followed by the 6:30 workshop. Admission is a suggested $5-15 donation.

Willy St. Co-op East is located at 1221 Williamson St. in Madison. Out of consideration for Co-op shoppers, please park on the street.

Acoustic Music Night at Talula – April 12th

The Madison Songwriters Guild will join forces with Talula‘s acoustic jam for a new monthly songwriter night starting this Tuesday, April 12th at 8 p.m. This growing acoustic jam will give songwriters a chance to play with a backing band. In April, Rich Baumann and Tom Kastle will represent MSG, but everyone is welcome. Musicians are encouraged to get up on stage to jam with the band or to try out a tune and have the band jam along.

Already known for great food and music, this event will become a songwriter favorite, so check it out.

April Song Showdown Winner!

Congratulations to April’s winner of the Song Showdown, Sawyer Gebauer who won with his song, “O Lost.” The Song Showdown happens every first Wednesday of the month, includes an open mic, and is webcast on Red Dragon TV. For more information, see our Events page.

March Song Showdown – 3/6

The Song Showdown rolls on Wednesday, March 6th at 7 p.m. at Red Dragon TV, 109 E. Lakeside St. in Madison. Hosted by 2010’s Song Showdown winner, Wolfgang Lochner, the Showdown is also webcast live on

Come to compete, play at the open mic, or to cheer on your favorite performer. Everyone’s welcome to play in the open mic, but you must be an MSG member to compete in the Showdown and new members may sign up at the event.
